Devastating Injury: McGeough's hockey career came to an abrupt end
during the 1988-89 season -- his rookie year with Springfield in the AHL.
During the second period of Springfield's Oct. 11, 1988, game at Cape
Breton, McGeough broke his back after becoming tangled with Cape Breton's
Nicolas Beaulieu and falling to the ice when he lost his balance. Unable to
break his fall because his arms were caught, McGeough, playing in just his
third AHL game, crashed face-first into the boards. Taken off on a
stretcher, he was rushed to the hospital in Sydney, Nova Scotia, where
McGeough underwent major surgery to implant a metal rod and fuse his spine.
In the end it was determined that he had fractured and dislocated two
vertebrae, but was not destined for major paralysis. To speed his recovery,
doctors had to immobilize McGeough for two months. On Dec. 6, McGeough was
transferred to Craig Hospital in Englewood, Colo., where he began his long
rehab process at a facility specializing in spinal cord injuries. On Dec.
28, 1988, McGeough had a second spinal fusion operation. During the
procedure, doctors took bone from his right hip and planted it in his spinal
column. By early January, McGeough was able to stand, and he was soon able
to walk with crutches. On Feb. 4, 1989, McGeough was released from the
hospital, although he remained in the Denver area to undergo months of
physical therapy. Unable to resume his hockey career, he recognized his good
fortune in regaining mobility because the injury could have been so much
more severe. In McGeough's honor, St. Lawrence's hockey program created an
annual trophy for its top defenseman
called the Pete McGeough Award.
Personal: Full name is Peter McGeough. ... Also known as Peter McGeough
during his playing days. ... Son of former minor-leaguer Jack McGeough. |
