AWARDS AND HONORS Miscellaneous: Fought Rick Tocchet midway through the first period of his
first NHL game. ... Missed start of 1987-88 season with hernia, an injury
developed during New Jersey's training camp in September 1987. The hernia
required surgery in October 1987. ... Missed entire 1989-90 NHL season with
broken left leg, an injury suffered when he got his skate caught in a rut in
the ice while trying to avoid a collision with Kirk Muller during New
Jersey's training-camp practice on Sept. 21, 1989. Muller had been skating
back into line of teammates after a one-on-one drill. Stewart's leg was
broken in four places as a result of the spiral fracture of his left tibia.
His leg was in a cast until Jan. 9, 1990, and he did not resume skating until late February 1990. He did not return to game action until
joining Utica for the final game of 1989-90 AHL regular season in April
1990. ... Retired for the first time on Oct. 28, 1991, the day
after playing what proved to be his his final NHL game with Boston at
Chicago Stadium. He said he had chosen to abruptly retire due to what
The Hockey News reported at the time were "psychological problems and
unhappiness with his enforcer role." ... Came out of retirement to sign with Winnipeg as
an unrestricted free agent on Oct. 5, 1992, but never played for parent
team. |

TRADE:
New Jersey traded Stewart to Boston in exchange for a 1993 conditional draft
pick on
October 16, 1991. The deal was later voided when Stewart opted to retire
less than two weeks after the trade. |
