games of 1984-85 regular season and entire 1985 WHL playoffs after spending
majority of 1984-85 season in Italy, where he led the Italian league in
scoring at the age of 20 and led Bolzano to a championship. After that
final stint, he never played in North America again, instead playing 13
seasons in Europe before retiring at age 33 in 1998. ... Played on line with
Gord Sherven for Rosenheim in 1990-91. Derkatch's True Height: Although Derkatch was listed at 5-foot-6 for much of his
career, his true height was under 5-foot-5, and most likely somewhere in the
range of 5-foot-4½.
Despite his remarkable feats in junior, extensive media coverage and
a high pre-draft ranking from The Hockey News, Derkatch's height made
him an afterthought on draft day in 1983. He ended his WHL career with a
phenomenal 491 career points, ranking second behind Brian Propp, but that
didn't help him get an NHL contract with Edmonton. As a result, he holds a dubious WHL record:
No WHL player ever had more points in one season than Derkatch's 179 in
1982-83 without playing at least one NHL game. |
