with a new NHL team and unofficially retired at age 38 on June 30, 2002,
despite holding out hopes for a comeback in 2002-03. He later officially
retired to pursue a coaching career in January 2003. Tocchet's Big Suspension: The
NHL suspended Tocchet for 10 games during the 1988-89 season for bruising
Dean Chynoweth's eyeball in a fight during Philadelphia's Oct. 27, 1988,
game vs. N.Y. Islanders. Tocchet was given a match penalty for intent to
injure on the play, prompting a review by NHL vice-president Brian O'Neill.
A hearing was held on Oct. 28, 1988, and three days later, O'Neill announced Tocchet would be suspended for having shown no
restraint in grabbing Chynoweth's face. Tocchet was stunned by
the verdict, because he thought the hearing went well. Due to the suspension, Tocchet
sat out Philadelphia's games from Oct. 29, 1988,
through Nov. 18, 1988. |

Philadelphia traded Tocchet, Kjell Samuelsson, Ken Wregget and 1993
third-round pick (Dave Roche) to Pittsburgh for Mark Recchi,
Brian Benning and Los Angeles' 1992 first-round pick (Jason Bowen) on
February 19, 1992. Eight years later, Philadelphia got Tocchet back by
trading Mikael Renberg to Phoenix for Tocchet on March 8, 2000. |
