AWARDS AND HONORS Miscellaneous: Wore No. 25 at Minnesota's training camp in 1988. ... Demoted by Minnesota to Kalamazoo (IHL) on
Oct. 5, 1988, but refused to report to the minor leagues, instead saying he
would return to Czechoslovakia. On Oct. 8, 1988, Minnesota suspended Liba
indefinitely. Three days later, they resolved the situation by
trading him to N.Y. Rangers. ... Had assist in first NHL game. ...
Missed parts of 1988-89 season with bruised left hand, an injury suffered in
December 1988, with broken right little finger, suffered in
December 1988, and with separated shoulder, an injury suffered during Los
Angeles' Jan. 21, 1989, game at Hartford. He did not return until Los
Angeles' Feb. 18, 1989, game vs. Quebec. ... Released by Los Angeles on May
24, 1989. Unhappy in the NHL, he returned home
to Czechoslovakia. |

team. Liba and Pasek signed their first NHL contracts on May 27, 1988. ...
Spoke no English when he arrived in North America after final release by
Czech hockey authorities on Aug. 18, 1988. He immediately enrolled in
pre-training camp language class. ... Did not play during 2001-02 season,
but did not officially retire at that time. |
HOW HE GOT AWAY |
TRADE:
Calgary traded Liba to Minnesota in exchange for 1988 fifth-round pick
(Thomas Forslund) on May 20, 1988. Liba, however, never played for the North
Stars because Minnesota later traded Liba, Brian Lawton and Rick Bennett to
N.Y. Rangers in exchange for Paul Jerrard, Mark Tinordi, Bret Barnett, Mike
Sullivan and Los Angeles' 1989 third-round pick (Murray Garbutt) on October
11, 1988. |
