| WHAT HAPPENED |
With their ninth-round pick, Buffalo called the name of Eric
Weinrich, a promising defenseman from North Yarmouth Academy in Maine.
Although Weinrich would go on to become a solid NHL player, the Sabres made
a big mistake picking him in 1984.
Buffalo scouts had failed to do their homework and assumed that Weinrich's
birthdate fell before the Sept. 15, 1966, deadline for players to be draft
eligible. Unfortunately, Buffalo was off by three months. Weinrich's actual
birthday was Dec. 19, 1966, meaning he could not be selected until the
following year. In keeping with draft rules, the Sabres were not allowed to
announce another player with their pick and therefore had to forfeit it. New
Jersey ultimately managed to draft Weinrich in the second round of the 1985
NHL Entry Draft. |
