1985-86: Was member of Montreal team that went on to win Stanley Cup, but did not have name engraved on Cup since he did not appear in any of team's playoff games due to injury.
Miscellaneous: Starred for Montreal in 1984 playoffs despite having played only four regular-season games after being called up as team's third goaltender. ... Missed part of 1984-85 season with groin injury, suffered when he was hit by a shot during a Montreal practice in late February 1985. His replacement on the roster was Patrick Roy, who got his first NHL call-up in Penney's absence. ... Missed part of 1985-86 season with bruised shoulder, an injury suffered during Montreal's Dec. 28, 1985, game vs. New Jersey. ... Missed remainder of 1985-86 season and entire 1986 playoffs with damaged cartilage in left knee, an injury suffered during Montreal's March 22, 1986, game at St. Louis. The injury required season-ending arthroscopic surgery in April 1986. ... Asked Montreal to trade him as early as January 1986, since Patrick Roy was team's goalie of future, and organization eventually obliged by sending him to Winnipeg before the 1986-87 season.
