Miscellaneous:
Led all NHL rookie defensemen with 159 shots on goal in 1986-87. ... Assisted on Pat LaFontaine's goal in fourth OT of N.Y. Islanders' Game 7 first-round playoff series win over Washington on April 18, 1987. ... Missed parts of 1987-88 season with pneumonia in left lung, diagnosed in November, 1987, with strained abdominal muscle, suffered in December 1987, and with back spasms, suffered in February 1988. ... Was represented by Dean Lombardi during his playing days with N.Y. Islanders. When Lombardi stopped being an agent and became Minnesota's assistant general manager in 1989, he coaxed Leiter out of retirement so that he could join the North Stars.

Miscellaneous: Competed in 1982 U.S. National Sports Festival. ... Made 1984 U.S. Olympic team out of training camp, but was cut early into team's 1983-84 pre-Olympic tour. ... Signed pro tryout contract with Indianapolis (CHL) in October 1983 so that he would not jeopardize his Olympic eligibility if recalled to Olympic team. He was never recalled and played entire season in Indianapolis. ... Paired on defense with Darcy Regier for Indianapolis in 1983-84. ... Retired for first time during the summer of 1988 so that he could start a home-remodeling business in Agawam, Mass. He did not play in 1988-89, but came out of retirement to briefly join Minnesota organization for 1989-90 season before retiring again to resume his work in home remodeling rather than accept a demotion to the minor leagues. ... Was active in charitable causes during his playing days, including work as chairperson of the N.Y. Islanders' annual food drive.
HOW HE GOT AWAY
WAIVER DRAFT: N.Y. Islanders left Leiter unprotected for the 1989 NHL Waiver Draft, because they still owned his rights despite his having retired before the 1988-89 season. He was claimed by Minnesota with the North Stars' third choice on October 2, 1989.
