AWARDS AND HONORS 1979-80: Played on first Quebec Nordiques NHL team.
Miscellaneous: Had assist in his first NHL game. ... Missed part of
1980-81 season with back spasms, an injury suffered in February 1981. ...
Missed part of 1983 playoffs with thumb injury. ... Missed part of 1983-84
season with knee injury suffered during Quebec's Jan. 19, 1984, game at
Boston. ... Set off major brawl between Quebec and Montreal during Game 2 of
the team's playoff series on April 20, 1984. The brawl started when he
sucker-punched Montreal's Jean Hamel in the eye. Sleigher was ejected from
that game. ... Missed part of 1984-85 season with damaged rib cartilage, an
injury suffered in January 1985. ... Missed most of 1985-86 season with pulled
groin, an injury first suffered during Boston's
Oct. 16, 1985, game at Vancouver and re-aggravated during Boston's Dec. 10,
1985, game at Philadelphia. ... Missed entire 1986-87 season while
recovering from off-season surgery to repair the groin injury he suffered in
1985. He required additional surgery on Feb. 7, 1987, but his rehabilitation
efforts were unsuccessful, and the injury ended his career. |

HOW HE GOT AWAY |
WHA/FREE AGENCY: Sleigher never signed with
Montreal, instead jumping to the WHA. He did not enter the NHL until the
1979 NHL-WHA merger. No team claimed him off the Birmingham roster in the 1979 WHA Dispersal Draft,and
he became an unrestricted free agent after Montreal chose not to take him back
in the 1979 NHL Reclaim Draft. He signed with Quebec on September 11, 1980. |
