AWARDS AND HONORS Coaching Career: Named Prague Sparta (Czech
Republic) assistant coach on July 18, 2005. Miscellaneous: Led Prague Sparta
(Czechoslovakia) with 30 points in 1987-88. Personal: Also known
as Dave Volek during his NHL career. IIHF Suspension: In August 1988,
the International Ice Hockey Federation placed Volek on a six-month
suspension after he tested positive for steroids during the Czechoslovakian
playoffs in April 1988. The suspension was announced during the summer, not
long after Volek defected from Czechoslovakia to Canada via West Germany
(where he had gone with permission to visit his parents) on
July 25, 1988. Volek, accompanied out of the country by his fiancee, Alice
Henysova, was helped to defect by agent Rich Winter. Following the
suspension, Winter argued against the IIHF action, claiming that the steroid
charges were false allegations by the Czech hockey authorities that were
designed to keep Volek from defecting to North America. He said Volek had
never used steroids, and that the Czechs had only tested him for drugs as
insurance against the possibility of his leaving after the season (since he
was due to enter the army and the rest of his family had already left three years earlier). Winter
said that the Czechs figured that if they could
taint Volek's image, they might hurt his chances of ever playing in the NHL.
Winter also said Volek was nothing more than a "political pawn" whose
suspension status would be used in talks between the NHL and IIHF. In the
wake of the suspension, while Volek was spending time in Edmonton with his
agent, the New York Islanders offered Volek his first NHL
contract, which he signed on Aug. 31, 1988. Fortunately for Winter and Volek, the
Islanders and NHL did not feel entirely obligated to honor the IIHF suspension by
keeping Volek out of the league. On Sept. 7, 1988, Volek joined the
Islanders for the opening of their 1988 training camp, and three weeks
later, after Volek had played in several exhibition games, NHL president
John Ziegler announced that Volek could open the season in the NHL because
the IIHF had failed to produce enough evidence to prove that Volek had ever
failed a drug test for steroids. |
