Messier got a five-minute boarding penalty on the play, and Cavallini did not return to action until St. Louis' March 30, 1989, game vs. Quebec. ... Led St. Louis with plus-25 rating in 1988-89. ... Finished fourth among defenseman in fan voting for 1991 NHL All-Star Game with 125,503 votes. ... He did not return to action until St. Louis' Nov. 20, 1991, game vs. Toronto. ... Missed part of 1993-94 season with non-displaced fracture of left eye socket, an injury suffered when he was hit by Ken Sutton's shot, which deflected up at his face off his own stick, during Dallas' Jan. 16, 1994, game vs. Buffalo. The cut on the left side of his face required 22 stitches to close. He did not return to action until Dallas' Feb. 2, 1994, game at Winnipeg, and played the remainder of his career with a visor. ... Played left wing in Dallas' Feb. 11, 1995, game vs. Calgary. ... Led Dallas with plus-8 rating in 1995. ... Retired from NHL early in 1995-96 to focus on his career as an investment broker. He opted to retire because he had lost his regular spot in the Dallas lineup and feared a demotion to the minor leagues after being placed on unconditional waivers on Nov. 2, 1995. As a result, Cavallini would need to accept a contract buyout or report to the IHL. In accepting a buyout and ending his career, he gave up a $695,000 salary in both the 1995-96 and 1996-97 seasons. He then began working full-time for A.G. Edwards.
The Loss of a Fingertip: Cavallini missed 13 games during the 1990-91 season with a bizarre left index finger injury, in which he lost the tip of the finger. He suffered the injury while blocking a Doug Wilson slapshot during St. Louis' Dec. 22, 1990, game vs. Chicago. The force of Wilson's shot literally severed the tip of Cavallini's  finger. Cavallini found the tip of the finger inside his glove. Doctors hoped they could re-attach the tip in surgery, but their efforts failed. The piece of the finger was removed and the exposed bone covered with grafted skin. Cavallini did not return to action until St. Louis' Jan. 25, 1991, game at Detroit. He scored a goal in that game.

TRADE (2): Washington traded Cavallini to St. Louis for a choice of Montreal's 1988 second-round pick or St. Louis' 1988 second-round pick (Washington chose the Montreal's pick and drafted Wade Bartley) on December 11, 1987. Five years later, Washington got Cavallini back from St. Louis for Kevin Miller on November 1, 1992. Washington lost Cavallini a second time when the Capitals traded him to Dallas for future considerations (Enrico Ciccone) on June 20, 1993. Dallas sent Ciccone to Washington to complete to deal on June 25, 1993.
