Daneyko missed just over half the 1997-98 season after he voluntarily
entered the NHL/NHLPA in-patient substance abuse and behavioral health program on Nov.
6, 1997. Signs of Daneyko's troubles were in evidence as early as the
1996-97 season when he mysteriously missed two games in November 1996
despite a history of rarely missing games. Teammates knew something was
wrong with Daneyko, and were not completely surprised when he left the team
to enter rehab. Prior to his decision to seek help on Nov. 1, Daneyko had
played in all of New Jersey's first 11 games of the 1997-98 season. While he
was absent from the team, he was entitled to receive full pay and benefits.
After checking into the program in November, 1997, Daneyko did not resume
skating until Dec. 26, 1997, and did not rejoin teammates in practice until
Feb. 3, 1998. He finally returned to action for New Jersey's Feb. 25, 1998,
game at Florida. It was the Devils' first game after the extended 1998
Olympic break. |
