Missed remainder of 1999-00 season with abdominal injury and hernia, suffered during San Jose's Nov. 28, 1999, game vs. New Jersey. The hernia required surgery on Jan. 10, 2000. The injury effectively ended his career at a time when San Jose was already in the process of negotiating to buy out his contract. The Sharks completed the buyout and released Craven on Jan. 20, 2000.
Craven's Long Wait: Prior to the 1994-95 season, Craven petitioned the NHL to be considered as a Group V unrestricted free agent instead of a Group II restricted free agent. Craven had played out his option with Vancouver in 1993-94 and was still a year away from being old enough to qualify for Group III unrestricted free agency. However, because he had played more than 10 seasons and had not earned the league average in 1993-94, Craven, who had earned $570,000, felt he deserved Group V status. Craven said he would not sign with Vancouver or attend the Canucks' training camp until the NHL had ruled on his contract situation. Vancouver had not made Craven a qualifying offer, so he could have signed an offer sheet with another team without Vancouver having the right to match the contract. However, if Craven did sign as a Group II free agent, Vancouver would be entitled to compensation from Craven's new team. This became the major sticking point in Craven's ability to find a new home. Unfortunately for Craven, the NHL lockout of 1994-95 began before the league had made its ruling. Craven was forced to wait until the league re-opened for business in late January 1995. It then took several more weeks for arbitrator George Nicolau to hear his case, and Craven's hearing was not finished until March 3, 1995. As Craven awaited the ruling from Nicolau, Vancouver announced that it had traded Craven to Chicago in exchange for Christian Ruuttu. Chicago offered Craven a four-year contract worth $4.3 million. Thrilled with the offer, Craven signed with the Blackhawks on March 10, 1995, thus nullifying the need for a ruling. It later turned out that Vancouver and Chicago had been negotiating the Craven deal for weeks, and that the Blackhawks had made another trade in February based on the knowledge that they were going to get Craven from Vancouver. Craven, who had strained muscles in his back while lifting weights in February 1995, finally made his Chicago debut in the Blackhawks' March 23, 1995, game against his former team, Vancouver. He had an assist in that game.
