N.Y. Islanders Saraceno Award (Best Preseason Rookie): 1982
1981-82: Played on N.Y. Islanders team that won Stanley Cup. His name
was engraved on the Cup because he appeared in playoffs, but he did not play
in any Stanley Cup Finals games vs. Vancouver. Coaching
Career: Named Calgary assistant coach on Aug. 11, 2000, and remained in
position until March 14, 2001. ... Named Calgary head coach on March 14, 2001,
and remained in position until Dec. 3, 2002.
Miscellaneous: Scored goal in his first NHL game. The goal, at 17:32 of
the third period, beat Quebec goaltender Clint Malarchuk and was the final
score in a 10-7 N.Y. Islanders win over Nordiques. The game was Gilbert's only
appearance during the 1981-82 regular-season, although he was recalled to N.Y.
Islanders for start of the 1982 playoffs as an injury replacement for Bob
Nystrom. ... Played on line with Bryan Trottier and Mike Bossy for N.Y.
Islanders in 1983-84. ... Missed N.Y. Islanders' 1984 training camp and start
of 1984-85 season with stretched ligaments in left ankle, an injury suffered
while jogging in September 1984. ... Named NHL Player of the Week for the week
ending Jan. 4, 1985. ... Missed remainder of 1984-85 season, entire 1985
playoffs and start of 1985-86 season with severely damaged ligaments in left
knee, an injury suffered when he was checked by Jamie Macoun into an open gate
at the Flames bench during N.Y. Islanders' Feb. 27, 1985, game at Calgary. The
injury required arthroscopic surgery, which proved ineffective. It then
required major reconstructive surgery, and he did not return to NHL action
until N.Y. Islanders' Nov. 17, 1985, game at Philadelphia, having tested the
knee in two minor-league games with Springfield (AHL). ... Missed part of
1986-87 season with broken jaw, an injury suffered in fight with Tiger
Williams during N.Y. Islanders' Oct. 11, 1986, game at Los Angeles. The injury
required that his jaw be wired shut. He lost 13 pounds during that time period
and did not return to action until N.Y. Islanders' Nov. 9, 1986, game at
Buffalo. ... Missed parts of 1986-87 season with bruised right thigh, an
injury suffered during N.Y. Islanders' Dec. 7, 1986, game at Boston, with
bruised hip, an injury suffered in February 1987, and with separated right
shoulder, an injury suffered during N.Y. Islanders' March 13, 1987, game at
New Jersey. ... Missed part of 1987-88 season with bruised right knee, an
injury suffered during N.Y. Islanders' Feb. 20, 1988 vs. Hartford. ... Missed
