HOW HE GOT AWAY
FREE AGENCY: Gilhen played out his option with Hartford in 1984-85 and was not offered another contract for 1985-86, making him an unrestricted free agent. He signed a tryout contract with his hometown Winnipeg Jets in August 1985, attended the Jets' training camp in September 1985, and later signed a multiyear contract with the team.
