HOW HE GOT AWAY
WHA/EXPANSION: Unlike other draft picks, who snubbed the NHL in favor of the WHA, Howe was already playing in the WHA at the time Boston selected him. He did not enter the NHL until the 1979 NHL-WHA merger. Boston briefly regained his rights in the NHL Reclaim Draft on June 9, 1979, but Hartford immediately took him back as part of its privilege to protect three players from its WHA franchise.
