AWARDS AND HONORS Miscellaneous: Missed start of Hartford's
1980 training camp with sprained ankle, an injury suffered when he stepped in
a pothole while crossing a street in Haileybury, Ontario, in September 1980.
... Missed parts of 1981-82 season with thigh and eye injuries. Arthur Quits Hockey: Arthur made a
true career choice at the age of 21, when he announced his retirement from the
NHL to attend medical school on Oct. 20, 1982. Philadelphia had demoted Arthur
to its AHL affiliate in Maine, and given the choice between playing in the
minors and pursuing his education, Arthur picked school. Although at least one other NHL
player, Randy Gregg, also became a medical doctor during his playing days,
Arthur was the only draft pick in history to put medicine ahead of hockey and
give up his entire NHL career in order to become a doctor. Arthur said he did
not feel he could balance hockey and medical school, so he chose the latter.
He was earning close to $80,000 per year in the NHL but was convinced he would
make similar money as a doctor. He was also scared that he was putting his own
medical career at risk by risking injury in hockey, and he didn't enjoy the
pro hockey lifestyle. He said he didn't enjoy major-junior hockey, either, but
had endured it because it was the best route to the NHL. Because Arthur
retired from hockey with time remaining on the original contract he signed
with Hartford, the NHL ruled that the Whalers owed Philadelphia compensation,
because they had traded Arthur to the Flyers the previous year under the terms
of his contract. As a result, Philadelphia received Hartford's 1984
third-round pick (John Stevens). |
