1981-82: Played on Vancouver team that went to 1982 Stanley Cup Finals but
missed entire playoffs that year due to injury.
Coaching
Career: Named Hartford assistant coach in July 1992 and remained in that
position until July 1995. ... Named Carolina assistant coach on June 22,
1999, and remained in that position until June 25, 2006. ... Named Carolina
associate head coach on June 25, 2006 and remained in that position through
2006-07 season.
Management Career: Named Philadelphia
coordinator of pro scouting and player development on Aug. 8, 1990, and remained
in that position until July 1992.
Miscellaneous: Missed most of 1978-79 season and 1979 playoffs with with
painful bone chip in hip muscles, a season-ending injury suffered during his
first game with Vancouver, on Dec. 30, 1978, at Los Angeles. Initially, the
injury was thought to be a groin problem, since the pain was felt in that
area, but it later became evident that the injury
required surgery to remove the bone chip. Vancouver general manager Jake
Milford claimed that Philadelphia had deceived him in the trade for McCarthy,
knowing that he was already injured. Philadelphia denied any knowledge of
McCarthy's hip condition at the time of the trade, but McCarthy said the
Flyers had to know because he was having his hip taped before every game.
Vancouver was unsuccessful in demanding compensation in the form of a draft
pick. ... Named NHL Player of Week for week of Oct. 21, 1980. ... Tied
Vancouver record (since broken) for goals by a defenseman with 16 in 1980-81.
... Became first Vancouver defenseman to play in an NHL All-Star Game when he
achieved feat in 1981. ... Missed part of 1981-82 season with partially
separated shoulder, an injury suffered in January 1982. ... Missed entire 1982
playoffs with broken ankle, an injury suffered when in collision with teammate
Curt Fraser at Vancouver's pre-playoff practice on April 5, 1982. ...
Missed part of 1982-83 season with sprained wrist, an injury suffered in

| TRADE: Philadelphia traded McCarthy and Drew
Callander to Vancouver in exchange for Dennis Ververgaert on December 29,
1978. Nearly seven years later, Philadelphia got McCarthy back when he signed
with Flyers as an unrestricted free agent on July 19, 1985. |
