AWARDS AND HONORS 1977-78: Played 14 regular-season games for Boston team that went to
1978 Stanley Cup Finals, but was not with team during playoffs. Miscellaneous: Scored goal in his first NHL game. ... Missed most of 1977-78 season with torn cartilage in
left knee, an injury that required surgery on Nov. 10, 1977. The surgery ended
his season and required a follow-up operation during the summer of 1978. ...
Missed part of 1979-80 season with right knee injury that required
arthroscopic surgery on Oct. 20, 1979. He suffered the injury during Boston's
Oct. 18, 1979, game vs. N.Y. Islanders. ... Suspended three games and fined
$1,000 during 1980-81 season for being first player to leave Boston bench
during Jan. 3, 1981, brawl at Colorado. The suspension and fine were later
overturned when video replays showed that Foster had only left the bench to
help Boston's trainer make his way to an injured player. ... Played on line
with Rick Middleton and Stan Jonathan for Boston in 1980-81. ... Missed parts
of 1981-82 season with separated shoulder, an injury suffered during
Colorado's Oct. 10, 1981, game vs. N.Y. Islanders, and with groin pull

HOW HE GOT AWAY |
RESTRICTED FREE AGENCY: Foster played out his option
with Boston in 1980-81, becoming a restricted free agent. As compensation for
signing Foster on July 21, 1981, Colorado gave Boston a 1982 second-round pick
(Brian Curran) and the option to switch 1982 first-round picks (Boston
exercised this option and selected Gord Kluzak, while New Jersey took Ken
Daneyko). Nearly five years later, Boston got Foster back
from Detroit for Dave Donnelly on March 11, 1986. |
