HOW HE GOT AWAY |
TRADE/ARBITRATION: Pittsburgh traded Pietrangelo to
Hartford for future considerations -- which became a 1994 third-round pick (Sven Butenschon) and
a 1994
seventh-round pick (Serge Aubin) -- on March 10, 1992. The teams could not
initially agree on compensation based on Pietrangelo's 1991-92 performance,
because Pittsburgh wanted him returned to the Penguins to settle the future
considerations. Pittsburgh was only willing to let Hartford keep
Pietrangelo if the Whalers gave up Kay Whitmore and a 1993 third-round pick.
Hartford wouldn't make that concession, instead offering two 1994 draft
picks, and the case went to arbitration. NHL arbitrator K. Allan Hinnegan
sided with the Whalers and awarded the 1994 picks to Pittsburgh on Sept. 14,
1992. |
