Missed part of 1996-97 season with bruised calf, suffered in
Pittsburgh's Oct. 22, 1996, game at Edmonton. ... Released by Pittsburgh on
Nov. 18, 1996. Ugly End in Minnesota:
Eleven games into the 1992-93 season, Quinn was suspended indefinitely by
Minnesota on Nov. 12, 1992. The suspension came after a 19-year-old Twin
Cities woman accused Quinn of raping her on the morning of Nov. 10, 1992.
The woman went to police, and Quinn was expected to be formally charged with
sexual assualt in Bloomington, Minn., on Nov. 17, 1992. Quinn had been
arrested on Nov. 10, but not immediately charged. He spent a short time in
jail before he was released on $30,000 bond. In posting bail, Quinn agreed
that American officials could bring him back to the U.S. if he went home to
Canada. The alleged sexual assault took place after Quinn had dined at a
Mall of America restaurant with former Penguins teammates Mario Lemieux,
Rick Tocchet and Bob Errey on the night before a game against Pittsburgh.
Police said the four men went to Hooters after their dinner, where they met
four women. The four players and four women then went back to the Penguins
players' hotel, where Quinn was accused of raping the 19-year-old in another
player's hotel room. Officially given a leave of absence by the North Stars
at the time of his arrest, Quinn would never play for the North Stars again.
Quinn insisted the sexual activity had been consensual, and a police
investigation eventually agreed. One week after he was supposed to be
charged, Quinn was vindicated when the Hennepin County attorney's office
announced that it would not be filing charges after all. Even though the
pending charges were dropped, the North Stars released Quinn on Nov. 24,
1992, for violating team curfew rules on the night of the alleged assault.
The curfew rule dictated that all North Stars players be home or at their
hotel by 11 p.m. on the night before a game. Quinn was relieved he would not
have to endure a trial, but was disappointed that the North Stars had not
stuck by him. |
