Six months later, Los Angeles got Hopkins back in exchange for future considerations on May 31, 1985. The future considerations settled the cash debt, making the first trade a de facto loan for the remainder of the 1984-85 season. Four months later, Los Angeles lost Hopkins again when the Kings released him and he signed with Edmonton as an unrestricted free agent on September 27, 1985.
