HOW HE GOT AWAY
FREE-AGENT COMPENSATION: Vancouver sent Ashton and 1982 fourth-round pick (Tom Martin) to Winnipeg as compensation for the Canucks' signing of restricted free agent Ivan Hlinka on July 15, 1981. Winnipeg had owned Hlinka's rights after selecting him in a special draft of Czechoslovakian free agents on May 28, 1981. The move by Vancouver was actually part of a three-way deal that hinged on Colorado's willingness to draft Jiri Bubla in the special Czech draft and then trade him to Vancouver in exchange for a promise that Ashton would be sent to Colorado through Winnipeg. After obtaining Ashton, Winnipeg completed the deal by sending him and a 1982 third-round pick (Dave Kasper) to Colorado for Lucien DeBlois on July 15, 1981.
