McCarthy's Criminal Activity: McCarthy was sentenced to more than five years in prison several years after his hockey career. He was convicted for drug-smuggling during the early 1990s when he was also abusing alcohol and marijuana. The FBI arrested him in 1994 when his name came up in connection with prominent Minnesota drug dealer Carl Thompsen, whom he considered a friend. McCarthy pled guilty to driving a truckload of marijuana (150 pounds) from California to Minnesota, saying at the time that he made the delivery to pay off a debt and to receive two pounds of the marijuana. Although he was living in Minnesota at the time, McCarthy was considered an illegal alien, which led to additional sentencing and his incarceration in the U.S. federal penitentiary in Leavenworth, Kansas. He served time in eight different U.S. and Canadian prisons from 1994 to 1998. During his time at Leavenworth, he organized a prison hockey school.
Personal: Nicknamed "Jug," "Juggie," and "Jughead" because of his resemblance to the Archie cartoon character. ... Full name is Tom Joseph McCarthy. ... Nephew of former NHL player John Stewart.
HOW HE GOT AWAY
TRADE: Minnesota traded McCarthy to Boston in exchange for 1986 third-round pick (Rob Zettler) and 1987 second-round pick Scott McGrady) on May 16, 1986.
