HOW HE GOT AWAY |
WHA/EXPANSION: Hangsleben never signed with
Montreal, instead jumping to the WHA with New England in 1974. When the WHA
and NHL merged, Montreal reclaimed his rights on June 9, 1979. Montreal then
left him unprotected for the 1979 NHL Expansion Draft, and he was claimed by
Hartford on June 13, 1979. This was part of a pre-arranged deal in which
Montreal agreed not to reclaim Gordie Roberts in exchange for a promise that
Hartford would select Hangsleben and not Rod Langway off Montreal roster. |
