in March 1991, when he was the subject of a controversial trade between Quebec
and Calgary that was voided by the NHL. The Nordiques and Flames made their
"deal" n March 2, 1991, with Quebec sending Loiselle to Calgary in exchange
for Bryan Deasley. The trade was initially permitted to go through, and
Loiselle flew to Calgary on March 4, 1991. However, when he got off the plane,
Loiselle was told that the deal had been voided because, just hours before the
trading deadline, Quebec had placed him on unrecallable waivers. Several teams
had tried to claim him, with the NHL determining that Toronto was the winner
of his rights. Quebec had made the trade hoping that the waivers could be
canceled, but the NHL was unable to oblige the request because the claiming
teams refused to allow it. In fact, Toronto was the only claiming team that
refused to let go of Loiselle after learning of the trade, which forced him to
join the Maple Leafs instead of the Flames on March 5, 1991. |
