Served as Hartford TV color commentator during 1986 playoffs. He did not play in the playoffs due to coach's decision, freeing him up for broadcast work. ... Named Chicago TV studio analyst prior to 1993-94 season and remained in that position through 1995-96 season. ... Named Hartford TV color commentator prior to 1996-97 season, relocated with team to Carolina prior to 1997-98 season, and remained in that position through 1997-98 season. ... Named Chicago TV and radio color commentator prior to 1998-99 season and remained in that position until September 2002.
Miscellaneous: Tied Peter Stastny for NHL game-tying goals lead with four in 1983-84. ... Missed part of 1984-85 season with pinched nerve in neck, an injury suffered in February 1985. ... Missed remainder of 1985 playoffs with knee injury suffered during Game 3 of Chicago's Campbell Conference finals series vs. Edmonton on May 9, 1985. The injury required surgery. ... Released by Hartford in June 1987. ... Wore No. 27 in Chicago's 1987 training camp.

HOW HE GOT AWAY
TRADE: Chicago traded Gardner to Hartford in exchange for future considerations (1987 third-round pick -- Mike Dagenais) on February 3, 1986. Over a year later, Chicago got Gardner back when it signed him as an unrestricted free agent in August 1987.
