1978-79: Played 32 regular-season games for Kalamazoo team that went on to win IHL playoff title, but was not with team in postseason.
Miscellaneous: Left Union College in December 1977 as a show of support for coach Ned Harkness, who had quit his job because he felt he was not treated fairly by Union administrators. Harkness had been recruiting academically unqualified players with the permission of Union president Thomas Bonner, who wanted the team to be successful at all costs. However, Union officials embarrassed Harkness by putting four players on academic probation for their poor grades. Harkness responded by quitting as coach, and Churchill and his teammates quit in solidarity with Harkness. Union was forced to finish the season with JV players, and the incident led to Bonner's resignation. ... Completed his college career at Union with school records (since broken) for goals (60), assists (72) and points (132).
