HOW HE GOT AWAY
FREE AGENCY: Millen played out his contract with Pittsburgh in 1980-81 and became a restricted free agent on June 1, 1981. He signed with Hartford on June 15, 1981. NHL arbitrator Joseph Kane awarded the Penguins Pat Boutette and Kevin McClelland on June 29, 1981, as compensation for Hartford's signing. The arbitration case was a victory for Pittsburgh, which got what it had wanted from Hartford.  The Whalers had offered John Garrett and Jordy Douglas as compensation.
