AWARDS AND HONORS Miscellaneous: Signed first NHL contract with Atlanta three days after
winning gold medal in 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, N.Y., becoming
first member of 1980 USA "Miracle on Ice" team to sign with an NHL team. ... Stopped
24 shots in his first NHL game, helping Atlanta to 4-1 victory over Colorado.
... Won his first start for Boston, making 20 saves in 3-2 victory over
visiting Montreal on Oct. 12, 1980. ... Had surgery to repair deviated septum
during 1981 off-season. ... Released by Boston in October 1982. ... Signed with Minnesota as free agent on March
22, 1983, and dressed as backup for one 1983 playoff game. ... Missed
remainder of
1983-84 season with torn hamstring muscle, an injury suffered during
Minnesota's Jan. 20, 1984, game at Detroit. He never played in the NHL after
that injury and retired later in 1984. |

U.S. celebrity as a result of his performance, which culminated with an
emotional search for his father as he stood draped in the U.S. flag on the ice at Lake
Placid. ... Appeared on cover of March 10, 1980, edition of Sports
Illustrated after first NHL game. ... Missed 1981 Canada Cup tournament
due to broken right index finger suffered during Team USA practice session in September 1981. ... Missed part
of 1981-82 season while recovering from Oct. 30, 1981, surgery to remove small
tumor in his right shoulder. During this time, on Nov. 11, 1981, he fell off a
ladder at home and suffered left foot sprain. ... Charged with vehicular
manslaughter in 1982, but was acquitted in a trial. ... Rejoined
Team USA for 26 games during 1982-83 season and helped team secure berth in 1984 Olympics by winning Pool B title at World Championships in
Tokyo. ... Named honorary captain for 1998 AHL All-Star Game. ... Returned to
North Easton, Mass., after retirement and became a local businessman and
marketing consultant. Went to work for Valassis Communications, a marketing
services company.
