Teams drafting in 1967 did so without being able to view fully detailed NHL reserve or sponsorship lists. These lists, available to all teams today, would have enabled the 1967 teams -- particularly the expansion teams -- to determine which players were eligible and which were already property of other NHL or minor-pro teams. The lack of such information was a definite risk, since NHL rules at the time stated that any team trying to draft an ineligible player would forfeit its pick in that round. Only one team fell into the trap. The expansion St. Louis Blues, with the third overall pick, made the mistake of drafting Saskatoon (SJHL) forward Dale Fairbrother, the older brother of former minor-leaguer Ron Fairbrother, without realizing he was on the Portland (WHL) team's sponsored list. |
