The Sharks placed Ewen on injured reserve, and he went season-ending surgery to repair ligament damage in both of his knees. Rather than attempt a comeback from the surgery, he opted to retire.
Ewen's Big Suspension: During the 1989 NHL playoffs, Ewen drew a 10-game suspension from the league for coming off the bench to start a fight with Wayne Van Dorp at 12:42 of the first period in Game 2 of St. Louis' second-round series vs. Chicago on April 20, 1989. Ewen was given a game misconduct, and his suspension, automatic under the NHL's Rule 66, was announced on April 21, 1989. Ewen served three of his games for the balance of the 1989 playoffs until St. Louis was eliminated by the Blackhawks in five games. He then carried the remaining seven games of the suspension into the 1989-90 regular season. As a result, he did not make his 1989-90 NHL regular-season debut until St. Louis' Oct. 24, 1989, game at Philadelphia.

He pointed out that role players are critical in hockey, but big salaries are basically reserved for the stars. In the column, he recounted his own career, noting that he "broke every finger on both hands at least twice" and had to have two of his right fingers wired together to preserve them. He also noted that he had 15 operations, including his career-ending double-knee reconstruction in October 1997.
