Miscellaneous: Joined Calgary on Feb. 29, 1988, for balance of 1987-88
season after competing for Czechoslovakia in 1988 Winter Olympics at Calgary. Czech
hockey officials agreed to release him to the NHL because he had just turned
30. He signed a contract that ran through the 1988-89 season. ... Played his
first NHL game at right wing on line with Joel Otto and Jim Peplinski,
becoming first Czech-trained player to play for the Atlanta/Calgary Flames
franchise. ...
Had assist on game-winning goal in his first NHL game. ... Finished eighth
among all NHL rookies with 54 points for Calgary in 1988-89, and tied for
second among NHL rookies with plus-19 rating. He was considered a rookie
even though he was 30 and had considerable international experience. NHL
rules were later changed to prevent players such as Hrdina from qualifying
for rookie awards. ... Led Calgary rookies with 54 points and 22 goals in
