AWARDS AND HONORS Miscellaneous: Scored goal in first NHL game, on his second NHL shot. His goal, at 10:15 of
the third period, beat North Stars goaltender Jon Casey to give St. Louis a
7-3 lead in a 1988-89 season-opening game that the Blues went on to win 8-3.
... Missed part of 1988-89 season with sprained left knee, an injury
suffered during St. Louis' Dec. 5, 1988, game vs. Minnesota. He did not
return to action until St. Louis' Jan. 7, 1989, game vs. Philadelphia. He
had a goal and an assist in that game. ... Missed part of 1988-89 season
with sprained shoulder, an injury suffered during St. Louis' Feb. 16, 1989,
game at N.Y. Islanders. He did not return to action until St. Louis' March
5, 1989, game at Chicago. ... Missed part of 1989-90 season with strained
right shoulder, an injury suffered during St. Louis' Oct. 12, 1989, game at
Minnesota. He did not return to action until St. Louis' Oct. 21, 1989, game
vs. Los Angeles. ... Played on line with Rod Brind'Amour and Dan Quinn for
St. Louis in 1990-91. ... Traded by St. Louis with Pat Jablonski, Darin Kimble and
Rob Robinson to Tampa Bay in exchange for future considerations on June 19,
1992, but never played for parent team. ... Wore No. 11 in Tampa Bay's 1992
training camp, the first training camp in franchise history. ... Traded by Tampa Bay with Martin Simard and Michel Mongeau to Quebec in exchange for Herb Raglan on Feb. 12,
1993, but never played for parent team. The Malarchuk Incident: Tuttle's
fairly brief NHL career might be best known for a horrific moment in which his
skate sliced the jugular of Buffalo Sabres goaltender Clint Malarchuk. It happened during
St. Louis'
March 22, 1989, game at Buffalo. As Tuttle was upended in
front of the Sabres goal by Buffalo defenseman Uwe Krupp, his skate cut
Malarchuk's neck. The skate got caught
under Malarchuk's mask and above his protective collar. It slashed his jugular
vein, causing blood to gush out rapidly from a six-inch cut on the right side
of his neck. Malarchuk flung off his mask and collapsed to the ice in a pool
of his own blood, fearing that he was about to die. Malarchuk was helped off
the ice under his own power, and Sabres trainers stitched him up quickly in
the dressing room before sending him to the hospital. That night, the grisly
scene was shown on videotape on sports broadcasts across North
America, and the incident gave both Malarchuk and Tuttle a dose of celebrity
they might never
have expected. In the end, the injury was far less serious than it had
appeared. Tuttle's skate had only cut Malarchuk's external jugular, sparing
his interior jugular and vocal cords. Malarchuk was released from a St. Louis
hospital on March 23, 1989, and returned to the Buffalo lineup on April 2,
1989. |
