NHL Records: Most shorthanded goals in one period (2 for Detroit in
second period vs. Minnesota on Jan. 9, 1990, shares record) Detroit Records:
Most shorthanded goals in one period (2 in second period vs. Minnesota on
Jan. 9, 1990), most shorthanded goals in one game (2 vs. Minnesota on Jan.
9, 1990, shares record)
Miscellaneous: Opened 1984-85 season as Detroit's fourth center at age 18,
but lost job to Darryl Sittler after Sittler arrived in trade from
Philadelphia. Detroit kept Burr on the roster as a spare center to avoid
having to send him back to Kitchener, because they would not be able to
recall him until the major junior season had ended. Determined not to impede
his development, Detroit sent Burr back to Kitchener (OHL) in late November
1984 after he had played a total of nine NHL games. ... Finished fifth among
all NHL rookies with 47 points in 1986-87. ... Finished third among all NHL
rookies with nine points in 1987 playoffs. ... Missed part of 1987-88 season
with bruised right knee, an injury suffered during Detroit's Jan. 30, 1988,
game at Toronto. ... Missed part of 1988 playoffs with concussion and
separated left shoulder, an injury suffered when he collided with Rick Zombo
during Detroit's April 20, 1988, practice -- between Games 1 and 2 of
second-round series vs. St. Louis. He did not return to action until Game 5
of the St. Louis series on April 27, 1988, at Detroit. ... Missed remainder
of 1988 playoffs with re-aggravation of left shoulder injury, suffered
during Game 1 of Detroit's Campbell Conference finals series at Edmonton on
May 3, 1988. ... Began playing left wing more than his natural position of
center during 1988-89 season. For the remainder of his career, he was
identified primarily as a left wing, rather than as a center. ... Led Detroit with four shorthanded goals in 1988-89. ...
Suffered from severe dehydration problems during 1990-91 season. He would
lose up to 12 pounds during games, and required intravenous fluids following
some games. ... Missed part of 1991-92 season with the flu, an illness
contracted in April 1992. ... Missed part of 1992-93 season with lower back
spasms, an injury suffered during Detroit's Oct. 20, 1992, game vs.
Winnipeg. He did not return to action until Detroit's Oct. 28, 1992, game
vs. San Jose. ... Demanded to be traded by Detroit early in 1993-94 season
because new head coach Scotty Bowman was not giving him much playing time
and was benching him for several games. Despite his status as a longtime
regular with the team, Burr was scratched from Detroit's lineup prior to an
Oct. 8, 1993, game at Anaheim -- setting off his trade demand. He said he
did not care for Bowman's tendency to play head games with otherwise
reliable veteran players. He also said Bowman had told all players on the
third and fourth lines that the Wings could win without them if necessary. ... Missed part of 1993-94 season with severed
tendon over right thumb, an injury initially suffered during Detroit's Nov.
28, 1993, game at N.Y. Islanders. Burr played two more games after suffering
the injury, but the tendon snapped while he was tying his skates on the
weekend of Dec. 4, 1993. He required surgery
on Dec. 8, 1993, and did not return to action until Detroit's Jan. 17, 1994, game
at Tampa Bay. ... Missed part of 1993-94 season with sprained lower left leg,
an injury suffered during
Detroit's Jan. 25, 1994, game vs. Chicago. He did not return to action until
Detroit's Feb. 11, 1994, game vs. Philadelphia. ... Feuded with Scotty
Bowman following 1995 Stanley Cup playoffs, when Bowman blamed Burr for a
goal scored by New Jersey's Scott Niedermayer in Game 2 of the Stanley Cup
Finals. The dispute with Bowman led to Burr's being traded away from Detroit
in August 1995. ... Missed part of 1995-96
season with elbow injury, suffered during Tampa Bay's Jan. 15, 1996, game at
N.Y. Islanders. ... Played on first Tampa Bay Lightning team to reach
Stanley Cup playoffs in 1995-96. ... Scored in overtime to give Tampa Bay a
4-3 win over Pittsburgh in 1996-97 season opener on Oct. 5, 1996. ... Missed
part of 1996-97 season with strained lower back, suffered in
Tampa Bay's Oct. 29, 1996, game vs. Chicago. He did not return to action
until Tampa Bay's Nov. 4, 1996, game at N.Y. Rangers. ... Missed part of
1996-97 season with severed tip of left ring finger, suffered when
he was slashed by Rob DiMaio during Tampa Bay's Dec. 19, 1996, game at
Boston. Doctors at a nearby hospital sewed the finger back together, and
Burr did not return to action until Tampa Bay's Jan. 4, 1997, game at
Pittsburgh. ... Missed half of 1997-98 season with torn ACL in right knee,
an injury suffered when he collided with John LeClair during San Jose's Oct.
13, 1997, game vs. Philadelphia. The injury required reconstructive surgery,
and Burr did not return until San Jose's Jan. 21, 1998, game vs. Calgary --
three months ahead of what was initially projected to be his return date.
... Missed part of 1999-00 season with strained groin, an injury suffered
during Tampa Bay's Oct. 7, 1999, game vs. Los Angeles. He did not return to
action until Tampa Bay's Oct. 30, 1999, game at Dallas. ... Missed part of
1999-00 season with back spasms, an injury suffered during Tampa Bay's Nov.
3, 1999, game at Atlanta. Although he returned to action in December 1999,
Burr was assigned to the minors, and never played another NHL game. |
