Coaching Career: Named Hartford assistant coach on Sept. 8, 1993, and remained in that position until August 1994.
Miscellaneous: Had assist in his first NHL game. ... Suspended three games by NHL during 1986-87 season for scratching Dean Evason's face during a fight at 16:46 of the first period of Quebec's Nov. 2, 1986, game vs. Hartford. Gillis received a double-match penalty for the incident. The NHL later reviewed tape of the play and announced a three-game suspension the following week. ... Missed part of 1989-90 season with sprained knee, an injury suffered in November 1989. ... Assisted on goal that made Peter Stastny the first European-trained player to scored 1,000 NHL points during Quebec's Oct. 19, 1989, game at Chicago. ...  Missed start of 1990-91 season with separated right shoulder, suffered during a preseason game in September 1990. ... Missed part of 1991-92 season with broken left foot, an injury suffered during Hartford's Feb. 4, 1992, game at San Jose. He did not return to action until Hartford's March 22, 1992, game vs. Pittsburgh.
Rare Illness: Gillis missed Quebec's entire 1989 preseason schedule and the first eight games of the 1989-90 season after a difficult summer in which he battled the rare neurological disorder, Guillain-Barre Syndrome. The illness, triggered by a virus, caused him to lose all sensation in his extremities. Suffering from nerve inflammation throughout his lower body, Gillis was hospitalized in Toronto. Although Gillis had no feeling in his legs or fingers, doctors determined that his case was relatively mild and would enable him to recover fully with no danger of relapse. Gillis was allowed to resume lifting weights on Aug. 15, 1989, and then permitted to resume skating on Aug. 29, 1989.
