AWARDS AND HONORS Quebec O'Keefe Cup (Three-Stars Leader): 1988-89
Quebec

by NHL during 1986-87 season for scratching Dean Evason's face during a
fight at 16:46 of the first period of Quebec's Nov. 2, 1986, game vs. Hartford.
Gillis received a double-match penalty for the incident. The NHL later
reviewed tape of the play and announced a three-game suspension the
following week. ... Missed part of 1989-90 season with sprained knee, an
injury suffered in November 1989. ... Assisted on goal that made Peter
Stastny the first European-trained player to scored 1,000 NHL points during

1989 preseason schedule and the first eight games of the 1989-90 season
after a difficult summer in which he battled the rare neurological disorder,
Guillain-Barre Syndrome. The illness, triggered by a virus, caused him to
lose all sensation in his extremities. Suffering from nerve inflammation
throughout his lower body, Gillis was hospitalized in Toronto. Although
Gillis had no feeling in his legs or fingers, doctors determined that his
case was relatively mild and would enable him to recover fully with no
danger of relapse. Gillis was allowed to resume lifting weights on Aug. 15,
1989, and then permitted to resume skating on Aug. 29, 1989. |
