AWARDS AND HONORS Miscellaneous: Had assist in his first NHL game. ... Scored goals to spoil
shutout bids by four different opposing goaltenders in final 10 minutes of
games during 1983-84 season. ... Missed start of 1985-86 season with left knee
injury, suffered during Pittsburgh's training camp in September 1985. The
injury required arthroscopic surgery. He did not return to action until
Pittsburgh's Nov. 8, 1985, game at New Jersey. ... Missed part of 1985-86
season with mouth injury, suffered during Pittsburgh's March 1, 1986, game vs.
Hartford. Career-Ending Back Injury:
Schmidt missed most of the 1987-88 season with a back injury dating all the
way to Pittsburgh's 1985-86 season. The injury, which did
not sideline him at the time, caused chronic back trouble throughout the
1986-87 season and required major surgery to repair slipped vertebrae after
the 1986-87 season. After the surgery, Schmidt was bed-ridden for three
months, and did not return to action until Pittsburgh's Dec. 9, 1987, game vs.
Calgary. Unfortunately, he re-aggravated his back injury in Pittsburgh's Dec.
17, 1987, game at New Jersey and his season was over. Rather than risk
permanent back trouble, he retired after the 1987-88 season. |
