the 1986-87 season
with a broken jaw suffered in a Jan. 22, 1987, car accident in
Detroit. The accident took place at 2:50 a.m., a few hours after the
Islanders lost a road game to the Red Wings. Jonsson and teammate Brian
Curran were returning to their hotel from the Detroit nightclub Taboo.
Unable to find a cab, they accepted a ride from two 17-year-old girls. Jonsson
and Curran did not know the girls were only 17, because they used fake ID
to enter Taboo. Brianna
Rebecca Baker, the driver, and Deirdre Culbertson were taking Jonsson and Curran back to the Westin Hotel when the crash
happened.
Baker ran her Chrysler LeBaron convertible through a red light in Detroit and
was hit by a tractor-trailer driven by 40-year-old Larry Lawhead of Maidstone
Township, Ontario. Baker
was severely injured and went into a coma. Jonsson had multiple jaw fractures,
Curran had cuts on his leg and scalp, and Culbertson also suffered minor
cuts. Jonsson's jaw injury required four hours of surgery on Jan. 22, 1987. He
did not return to action until April 4, 1987. |
