Winnipeg/Phoenix franchise history. ... Set Winnipeg/Phoenix single-season
record (since broken) for penalty minutes (287) in 1979-80. ... Suspended two
games by NHL for receiving four game-misconducts during 1979-80 season. He
served the suspension in March 1980. ... Suspended three games and fined $500
by NHL during 1981-82 season for pushing linesman Gord Broseker during
Winnipeg's Dec. 9, 1981, game vs. Toronto. ... Missed part of 1982-83 season
with stretched knee ligaments, an injury suffered in December 1982. ... Missed
part of 1985-86 season with flu, contracted in November 1985. ... Missed parts
of 1987-88 season with elbow injury, which required surgery in October 1987,
and with pulled groin, an injury suffered in March 1988. The Gardner
Incident: The NHL suspended Mann 10 games during the 1981-82 season for
leaving the bench to join an on-ice brawl during Winnipeg's Jan. 13, 1982,
game vs. Pittsburgh. Mann came onto the ice and sucker-punched Paul Gardner,
breaking Gardner's jaw in two places. Pittsburgh coach Eddie Johnston
complained Mann had been ordered into the brawl by Winnipeg coach Tom Watt.
The violence was so severe that the province of Manitoba charged Mann with
assault and convicted him, although he was given a suspended sentence. |

AWARDS AND HONORS 1987-88: Played on IHL regular-season champion (Muskegon). Miscellaneous: Missed
part of 1984-85 season and entire 1986-87 season with complications from abdominal injury, originally
suffered while playing for Fredericton (AHL) in December 1984. ... Was active
in charitable causes during his playing days, including work with Manitoba
Special Olympics. ... Became active in Oldtimers' charity hockey after his
retirement. ... Also joined the All-Stars charity baseball tour after his
retirement. His wife, a travel agent, booked tours for both the hockey and
baseball teams. ... An avid bow-hunter, he took up the sport during his junior
playing days and continued it throughout his career and after retirement. Personal: Full name is James Edward
