HOW HE GOT AWAY |
WHA/EXPANSION: Hislop never signed with
Montreal after graduating from the University of New Hampshire. Instead, he
signed with Cincinnati (WHA) as a free agent in July 1976. He was able to do
this because the Cleveland team that drafted him had folded and moved to
Minnesota in 1976. He was still with Cincinnati when that team folded prior to
the NHL-WHA merger in 1979, although his last WHA contract had already
expired, making him a restricted free agent. Montreal chose not to take him in
the NHL Reclaim Draft, and he was selected by Winnipeg off Cincinnati's roster
in the WHA Dispersal Draft on June 22, 1979. Less than a week later, Winnipeg
traded Hislop and Barry Legge to Quebec in exchange for Barry Melrose on June
28, 1979. |
