Holst was barred from competing for Austria in the 1984 Winter Olympics
on Feb. 6, 1984, just one day before the Games were set to begin. The IOC
ruled that Holst, in addition to some Italian and Canadian players, was not as
amateur because he had at one point in his career signed an official NHL
contract. Holst was therefore one of the last victims of the strict, old IOC
rules on professionals vs. amateurs. By the next Olympics, the rule was
relaxed and several players with NHL contracts were allowed to play. Miscellaneous: Remained in Austria
after his retirement and became key figure in popularizing sport of hockey in
that country. Personal: Full name is Gregory
Holst. |
