An Unlikely Olympic Medalist
Regan initially turned down an
invitation to try out for the 1972 U.S. Olympic hockey team for fear it
might end his college career. He was later invited to join after helping
BU tie Team USA in a December 1971 exhibition game. Regan left school
after Team USA agreed that he would be able to return if the Terriers'
other goaltender was injured or the coaches needed him. Regan ended up
as a spare goalie on the Olympic team that won silver in Sapporo, Japan.
Because both Mike Curran and Peter Sears were listed on the roster ahead
of him, he was ineligible to play in the tournament and left midway
through to rejoin Boston University. Even though he didn't make the
final cut, Regan still received a silver medal, personally presented to
him by teammate Robbie Ftorek after the U.S. players returned from Japan.
