season and remained in position through 2004-05 season.
Miscellaneous: Had assist in his first NHL game, which was also first
game in history of Winnipeg/Phoenix franchise. ... Missed part of 1979-80

on to win AHL playoff title, but missed playoffs due to injury.
Coaching Career: Served as Adirondack (AHL) player-assistant coach during
1986-87 season. ... Named Medicine Hat (WHL) head coach in August 1987 and
remained in that position until July 1988. ... Named Seattle (WHL) head coach
on Aug. 9, 1988, and remained in that position until July 18, 1989. ... Named
Adirondack (AHL) head coach on July 18, 1989, and remained in position until
June 25, 1992. Management Career: Named Adirondack (AHL) general
manager prior to 1990-91 season and remained in position until June 25, 1992. Miscellaneous: Was on Cincinnati (WHA) team that folded after 1978-79 season when WHA merged with NHL. He was claimed by
Quebec in the WHA Dispersal Draft on June 8, 1979. ... Missed part of 1985-86
season with knee injury suffered during game with Adirondack (AHL) in March
1986. ... Missed start of 1986-87 season after having surgery on leg in
September 1986. ... Quit as head coach of Memorial Cup champion Medicine Hat (WHL)
in sympathy with general manager Russ Farwell, who resigned because
he was underpaid. Melrose, expressing a willingness to take over Farwell's
GM job, requested a salary of $60,000, which Medicine Hat owner George Maser
refused to pay. Melrose later rejoined GM Farwell as coach in Seattle
(WHL). ... Was avid baseball
player during off-seasons of his playing days. Personal: Full name
is Barry James Melrose. ... First cousin of former NHL player Wendel Clark.

HOW HE GOT AWAY |
WHA/RIGHTS SOLD: Melrose never signed with
Montreal, instead jumping to the WHA with Cincinnati. When the NHL and WHA
merged in 1979, Montreal took Melrose back in the NHL Reclaim Draft and sold
his rights to Winnipeg on June 9, 1979. Winnipeg completed its acquisition of
Melrose by securing his WHA dispersal draft rights from Quebec in a trade for
Jamie Hislop and Barry Legge on June 28, 1979. |
