Slap Shot: Carlson and his
brothers, Jeff and Jack, played together on a line for the Johnstown Jets (NAHL) in
1974-75 and were the inspiration for the Hanson brothers in the
movie Slap Shot. Following the 1975-76 season, when filming on Slap
Shot was set to begin, director George Roy Hill could not find anyone
suitable to play the Hanson brothers. He offered the parts to the three Carlsons themselves. Both Steve and Jeff were available to participate in the
film, although Jack was unavailable because he was competing in the 1976 WHA
playoffs. Steve was given the role of Steve Hanson, who wore No. 17 for the
fictional team in the film, the Johnstown Chiefs. No. 17 was the same uniform
number he had worn for the Jets in 1974-75. The film made the two
Carlson brothers and their Johnstown teammate Dave Hanson, who played
Jack Hanson, into instant celebrities. The three continue to appear all over
the world at charity hockey events, and even reprised their roles for the film
Slap Shot 2. |
HOW HE GOT AWAY |
WHA/TRADE: Carlson was already playing in the
Minnesota (WHA) organization when he was drafted by Detroit and he remained in
the WHA after the draft. Three years later, Detroit traded his NHL rights to
Los Angeles in exchange for Steve Short on December 6, 1978. |
