HOW HE GOT AWAY
WHA/FREE AGENCY: Devine never signed with Toronto, instead jumping to the WHA with San Diego. He was not playing in the WHA when the NHL and WHA merged in 1979, making him an unrestricted free agent. He signed with N.Y. Islanders on Oct. 9, 1979.
