HOW HE GOT AWAY
WHA/EXPANSION: Stewart never signed with Montreal, instead jumping to the WHA with Cleveland. He finally entered the NHL when the WHA and NHL merged in 1979. Montreal chose not to take him back in the NHL Reclaim Draft on June 9, 1979, and he remained property of Quebec, which had selected him off the defunct Birmingham team's roster in the WHA Dispersal Draft.
