At the NHL trade deadline on March 13, 1979, Boldirev was part of the eight-player deal between Atlanta and Chicago. Three Black Hawks players, including top scorer Boldirev, went to the Flames for five Atlanta players, including Atlanta all-time franchise scoring leader Tom Lysiak. At the time of the deal, it ranked among the biggest trades in NHL history, involving multiple stars. Fans in both cities were upset about losing some of their favorite players, even though the major trade had been rumored and in the works for more than two months since Atlanta was known to be seeking Phil Russell.
