HOW HE GOT AWAY
WHA/WAIVER DRAFT: Geoffrion did not sign with Montreal after the draft, instead jumping to the WHA. He did not enter the NHL until the 1979 NHL-WHA merger. Montreal regained his rights in the NHL Reclaim Draft on June 9, 1979. The following year, Montreal left Geoffrion unprotected for the NHL Waiver Draft on October 8, 1980, and he was claimed by Quebec for $100 under terms of the NHL-WHA merger which allowed a former WHA team to reclaim a player once he was waived by his NHL drafting team. After reclaiming him off waivers, Quebec sold Geoffrion's rights to Winnipeg on October 8, 1980.
