HOW HE GOT AWAY
TRADE/FREE AGENCY: Vancouver traded Gillis and Jeff Bandura to N.Y. Rangers for Mario Marois and Jim Mayer on November 11, 1980. Three years later, Vancouver got Gillis back when he signed as an unrestricted free agent on October 4, 1983. Vancouver lost Gillis again when it did not offer him a contract after the 1985-86 season, and he signed with Philadelphia as a free agent in October 1986.
