HOW HE GOT AWAY |
RIGHTS SOLD: Boston sold Hagman's pro hockey rights
to Quebec (WHA) on December 2, 1977. The original deal was called a "loan for
the 1977-78 season -- without the right to recall." WHA president Howard
Baldwin refused to let the deal stand until it was reclassified as an outright
purchase, because Baldwin refused to let anyone play in the league under loan.
Hagman went back to Finland after the 1977-78 season and became an
unrestricted free agent two years later because his North American rights had
expired. He re-entered the NHL when he signed with Edmonton as a free agent in
July 1980. |
